AFRICAN SCHOOL ON INTERNET GOVERNANCE (AFRISIG)

International Travel

All funded participants should receive their return ticket to Durban no later than Friday October 7th. If you do not receive a copy of your ticket please contact the logistics team at MasediT@nepad.org and shawna@apc.org.

For your travel you will need the following:

  • Passport that is valid at least six months from date of entry to South Africa with two blank pages.
  • Copy of your electronic ticket.
  • Letter of invitation to AfriSIG, and if you are attending African IGF, please bring the invitation sent to you after you registered.
  • This logistics advisory, which has all contact details you need while travelling
  • Medication for all your health needs.
  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate, if required.

If you are coming from a country at risk of Yellow Fever you must bring your Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate or you will not be allowed to enter the country.

NOTE: Some airports require an airport tax fee in cash. Please check with your departure airport if they charge airport tax fees. The organisers are unable to reimburse airport taxes or any local costs in your home country.

Travel Insurance

We recommend that all participants obtain travel insurance for their trip. Kindly ensure that this insurance covers the date of departure from your country until the date of your return. Travel insurance will not be reimbursed.

Boarding Passes

The logistics staff will collect your boarding passes, so please ensure that you keep them safe during your travel.

Airport Transfers

Upon arrival at Durban King Shaka International Airport there will be signs for airport transfer. If you have any problem locating your airport transfer please contact Shawna by telephone at +270608360937. Should you not meet up with the arranged airport transfer you will be liable to pay your own airport transfer costs.

Group transportation will be provided between Garden Court South Beach Hotel and Diakonia Centre. Participants are expected to be in the lobby of the Garden Court no later than 8am each day, in order to take the bus together. Please note that if you miss this bus you will need to arrange your own transportation to the venue.

Meals and per diems

Breakfast will be provided by the hotel. Lunch and tea/coffee will be provided at the venue, and the organisers will make arrangements for your dinners.

Personal expenses

International and local telephone calls, laundry, use of the mini bar and all other personal expenses such as additional drinks and meals MUST be paid by the individual who ordered them before you check out of the hotel. We will not cover these costs.

Dietary and Special Requirements

If you have not done so already, please inform us before you travel if you have any special dietary requirements – vegetarian, halal and food allergies; and of other health and special requirements that you might have.

Communications

Wireless connectivity is available at all the hotels and the meeting venue. SIM cards are widely available for those who would like to purchase.

Climate

October is Spring in Durban, with average temperatures of 17 to 25 °C. The weather in October is arid with rain at times. Please bring light and comfortable clothing.

Electricity

The power supply in South Africa is 220vAC, 50Hz. Electrical sockets are rounded three pronged but some facilities also have 2-pin sockets available.

Currency

The current rate of exchange of the South African Rand is approximately R13 = 1 USD. Money can be exchanged at the airport and all major banks.

Safety

Participants should take some basic precautions to ensure your safety and the security of your valuable. Please keep your hotel room locked, and store your valuable in the hotel safety deposit box.
